Poundland’s 2016 solar “firefly” lamps.

Solar & Wind EBooks

Rather a nice light if I have to admit. Not sure how long the units are going to run at night with such a tiny solar cell on the end, especially if they are hung under branches. But the output is clearly intended to just be four small visual dots of light inside the coloured globes. The dots of light are from a short spiralled section of the common “copper wire” led string where surface mount LEDs are directly soldered across a pair of copper wires and then dipped in resin.

  1. The Mrs got several, and I weatherproofed them with that clear tape you were on about. They seem to have run out of these now alas. They seem pretty good, and for the price, well, good. We never got the clear ones the Mrs wanted though, she was all set with the glass paint LOL !

  2. CK Wunch says:

I think people might hang them on their washing lines, problem is in the cities who has washing lines?

  3. icarusi says:

Something you might want to check is waterfall/icicle/meteor lights. I got some with 12 leds driven by an 8 leg chip. Took me a while to figure out how it does the separate switching of 12 leds with no other components.

  4. nyetloki says:

I have one of these from halloween from HD in the US. I don't know if its just that I never see it, or not enough lights fall on it, but it seems the battery only lasts a few minutes unfortunately :(

  5. Saw these and was hoping they would be similar to the "firefly" lights used on the Pirates ride at Disneyland Paris, any ideas what they use there?

  6. saturn5tony says:

They are very nice, thank you for sharing!

  7. GateKommand says:

You are "warm white" mad mate lol

  8. John Jones says:

    Finger's almost healed, I see….

  9. Paul V says:

I would say they immitate the movements of fireflies, the springs would move in the slightest of winds.

Nevermind wrote the previous sentence halfway through x)

  10. I have no idea why i'm so interested in your videos. I dont understand anything but i guess it's your calm, scottish voice

  11. Davey Duff says:

I'd like to put some led filaments in this with maybe a B22 to E27 converter after taking out the guts, would look funny indoors. What glue or resin would you use?

  12. Robert Gift says:

Interesting!   I would hang them without their bulbs so that breezes make them move.
Makes no sense to use inefficient color filters.

  13. DiscoDesW says:

    Hi Clive,

What IP rating would you say these were? I live right on the coast and the LED solar light strings only usually last a couple of months at best before failing. If these are good IP they may fair better?

  14. BobEckert56 says:

At least it doesn't involve mains wiring. Whew!

  15. looks outside yeah, time to prepare for… sommer…

  16. purchased some of these and they fill up with water when it rains

  17. Fun vid, like the poundland stuff

  18. Sold out at my local one. :(

  19. You should do a video with Ashens – your knowledge of electronics and his knowledge of random tat would be an amazing combination!

  20. USFrozen says:

This has to be one of the first videos ive watched on Youtube that has 'Poundland' in the title that didn't involve Ashens.

  21. Zak Zennii says:

Once again, I am jealous of this magical PoundLand. I really wish they had locations on this side of the pond.

  22. Dollar Tree has gotten really cheap this year, they don't even carry solar lights anymore and NO MORE LED flashlights, only the tungsten types now..

  23. Bigrignohio says:

What a tiny battery. But it is not like that solar cell will give much output anyway.

  24. Eric B says:

yx805 is another one ive seen.

  25. Clive: Is the battery rechargeable on this one? I bought an LED solar powered keychain from one of the pound stores a while ago, and it worked for a day or two until it ran flat, at which point it stopped working completely. I took it apart and found a non-rechargeable battery inside it…

  26. Still loving the vids Clive, keep 'em coming, please. Even the simpler ones such as this are well worth viewing.
