Sorry that can of thornproofing wax didn't work out 🙁  We make a hand cream from beeswax and olive oil/coconut oil which would soften the beeswax some and give you a better consistency.  Perhaps that would do a better job?  We do about 1:1 ratio.  It's great on the hands in the wintertime.

  4. Look up tarp shelters configurations, simple and effective especially if you don't like floors.

If you already have a tent rope setup, perhaps what might help is not to go for tenting but to buy some canvas drop cloth fabric from Home Depot, which has a really good product – cheap and strong. A "9' x 12'" (which is actually 8-3/4 x 11-3/4) is around $22; there's also a 12' x 20' for about $33. Ladies around here use it to sew up outdoor upholstery and whatnot, it's not just for painting.

As for waterproofing, NOTHING WORKS for all that long, in my experience. Old timers used beeswax and turpentine, which not everybody can tolerate. There are people right now who make a crude sort of oilcloth with mixtures of those ingredients.

Are you using public libraries for Internet connection?

You wouldn't want to be on the ground in a tent during winter camping. A cold ground will draw moisture and heat from your body.

Petroleum is from the Earth, besides, where you going to find a live arctic seal to rub on that tent. Have you thought of pine tree sap?

I am still connected to your adventure, my friend. I am also looking for a light tent, for camping into the wilderness of the alpine area, in the mountains.(2,5 kg max). I saw you cut the floor – I use to dig around the tent so the water from the rain flows around.
