  1. I have one on ebay. Make sure you get a "SPOT" lens vs. a "LINEAR" Spots produce more concentrated heat.

  2. TIm Nguyen says:

    what's your ebay id?

  3. I just ordered a 49'' spot from you! Let the fun begin!!!

  4. 92BMW318is says:

What practical uses do these lenses have?

  5. I'm sorry Dan, I had to laugh at 1:32 when the glass pops and bites you back 😀
Another awesome experiment! If the glass was put in a proper container and you used a less focused beam, would it heat the glass up enough to be worked?

  6. BLAST FROM THE PAST

  7. rAdiant Jet says:

were can I get a lens like that?

  8. Hi Andre,

These types of lenses are on our website. What is the application?

  9. rAdiant Jet says:

I wanted to try it ut as a way to melt metals with out having to spend a fortune with running a crucable. and probly use it in survial situations to cook and heat water.

  10. Dan Kay says:

It's great that you're building stuff like this! Question though… Have you tried pointing these things at a peltier cooler? Seems like enough put together would generate quite a bit of usable electricity. (for those times when you want more than a grilled cheese)

Just something I've been thinking of myself, and I figured if you've already got half of what's needed, you could do a little thinking like that as well 😀

  11. JULYINJULY says:

Nice, 2007 wow way ahead of your time, like before the internets;)

  12. sumguy68 says:

why didn't the wood continue to burn?

  13. Falcrist says:

I guess the wood around it was cool enough to dissipate the heat.

  14. sumguy68 says:

I guess wood can be a funny thing. 1. Burn it a certain way and you get a fire 2. Burn it another way and you have charcoal. 3 Burn/char it a certain way and you get lumber more flame retardant than the original lumber (thought I read this somewhere). Maybe its burning so hot the wood is charred to the point of being an insulator.

  15. Out of an old projection screen TV. People are usually giving them away on craigslist for free. Take the front off there's usually a plastic screen, fresnel lens, and a thin reflector piece inside. Remove the outside pieces and the lens is in the middle. Bam free fresnel lens.

  16. rAdiant Jet says:

I got 3 now. I have been finding the projection TV's sitting outside houses in the trash. So do I mount it like a chalk board?

  17. Take some 1×1 and make a frame around the outside edge, screw that together. Then get some 14 pieces and go along the inside of the frame all the way around. Then turn it over and install the lens and use 4 more pieces of 1/4 to sandwich the lens in the frame. If you have any questions I found a YouTube video on how to build one. Do a search should be exactly how I explained. Enjoy.

  18. Symon Magnus says:

what was the temperature on the day of experiment? Will it be as effective in 15C as it would 45C?

  19. I like your devices. I want a very large fresnel convex lens to bake a huge limestone rock with a high temperature to meal it. To bake it needs a large amount of wood and it can damage forest. I belive the greenpowerscience institute you will fill this item. I hear the local people say that they bake it about 3 days & 3 night long and then meal it. If they bake a cart of limestone rock , they will need a twice cart of wood. I depend you. You can contact me with this phone number+9509258667529.

Cool toy, but Icehouse beer….really? I hope you found that on the side of the road!!
